Malmesbury

Fourteen miles west of Swindon. Hilltop town with ruins of vast 12th century Abbey. South porch of great beauty, stands on the site of a 7th century Abbey, the crypt of which still stands. There is a fine 16th century octagonal market cross and other old buildings in town, 17th century. Aubrey the antiquary went to school here. Local museum. Nearby is Weston Arboretorum.
