Wakefield

The capital of the West Riding on the Calder, Wakefield has evidence of settlers as long ago as 8000BC and was later home to a Roman Garrison. The 13th century saw a Cathedral built and one of the very rare bridges with a Chapel built in 1340s.

Wakefield was the major centre of the Yorkshire woollen industry until the introduction of mill working. It was a favoured place to live and has many Georgian buildings. Saxton, the first of our county map makers, was born here. The guild of Wakefield was responsible for the acting of the earliest types of English drama. In 1460 was fought the Battle of Wakefield Green.

The art gallery has work by Barbara Hepworth and Henry Moore. Nearby are the Yorkshire Mining Museum and Bretton Country Park, home of the Yorkshire Sculpture Park.
