Welcome to Huddersfield's Townpage

The university town of Huddersfield is a traditional textile town with a great history in the wool and cloth industries. The Ramsden Family built the great Cloth Hall in 1766 and owned the Ramsden Canal and railway service. Victorian buildings characterise the town and range from the Town Hall to the elaborate Brook Street market , Victorian stone arcades and grade one listed railway station, designed by JP Pritchett in 1850 and considered to be one of the finest in England. In contrast the town is home to a modern award winning new stadium which stands on Leeds Road.

Contemporary exhibitions and water colours by Gainsborough, Lowry, Turner and Constable can be found at the Huddersfield Museum and Art Gallery in the town centre. A great collection of toys, folk life displays and horse drawn vehicles can be discovered at the Tolson Memorial Museum. This beautiful mansion and its gardens were presented to the town by, Legh Tolson on the death of his two nephews in World War I and now maintained by Kirklees Metropolitan Council have been open to the public since 1922.
