Gatwick Gatwick is the site of London’s second airport, and is on direct route by road and rail between London and Brighton in the county of West Sussex. The airport was originally opened in 1936 and was home to an RAF flying training school which later went on to become an important RAF station in war time. After the Second World War it grew rapidly and in 1956 after a complete re-modernisation the airport was passed to commercial use, becoming the Gatwick Airport we know today. With an increase in modern air traffic, Gatwick has grown to accommodate its passing visitors and provides ample parking facilities and hotels. With reliable transportation and numerous hire car businesses its easy to get around. Gatwick’s proximity to London ensures that those staying in the area are close by to all its attractions and the Gatwick Express links the airport to several major towns and cities in the South. A spectator’s enclosure has been set aside for aircraft enthusiasts who enjoy plane sporting, watching arrivals and departures or unloading and loading. The Gatwick Aviation Society provides information on changes to the airlines found at Gatwick and reports on famous visitors here as well as world air news and UK airfield activities.
