County Guide - almost every destination in the UK

Atherstone - North of Nuneaton, on the Roman Watling Street. Old market town with fine buildings including the Old Swan. Street football traditionally played once a year. Bosworth Field is seven miles away, and Merevale Abbey, which has a 13th century chapel, is one mile away.

Nuneaton - Six miles north of Coventry in the county of Warwickshire is the busy market town of Nuneaton. It’s railway junction aided the growth of its many industries which at the time included hats and textiles, but today Nuneaton is largely a manufacturing town. The museum in Riversley Park tells the story of the town, but is also dedicated to the novelist George Eliot who was born at nearby Astley.

Although the largest modern centre in Warwickshire, Nuneaton has retained some of its history which can be discovered at 12th Century St Nicholas’ Church and the former Nunnery at St Mary’s Church with its George Elliot memorial garden. 12th Century Astley Castle, converted to a 16th century manor house lies within a moat and is one of the more popular historical attractions in the area. The central part of the town was badly damaged in second world war air raids and has since been replaced with modern buildings.

Local entertainment includes the Nuneaton Superplex, the Art Centre in Pool Bank Street which serves as a theatre, and a bustle of pubs, clubs and restaurants, and for those who don’t mind travelling further afield there’s the NEC in neighbouring Birmingham.

Shipston-on-Stour - Small former wool town and sheep market town some eight miles south of Stratford-upon-Avon. Many pubs and historic buildings. Nearby is the superb garden Hidcote Manor.

Stratford-upon-Avon - Stratford-upon-Avon lies 8 mile south-west of Warwick. Famous as the birthplace of William Shakespeare, it is a very popular place with tourists, with the house where the playwright was born being a highly-visited attraction. Also preserved in the area are Anne Hathaway’s Cottage, Hall’s Croft (lived in by Shakespeare’s daughter and son-in-law), Mary Arden’s House (Mary Arden was Shakespeare’s mother) and Nash’s House.

As well as being able to visit the beautiful properties associated with Shakespeare, one can take in one of his plays as the town is the home of the Royal Shakespeare Company. However there are many things to do in Stratford besides immersing oneself in Shakespeare. The town is also home to a Butterfly Farm, a Teddy Bear Museum, a Shire Horse Centre and Cox’s Yard, which combines exhibits on the history of Stratford with a micro-brewery and a restaurant.

Studley - Small town to the south of Redditch. Was the largest needle manufacturing centre in Europe, with a history of production going back three hundred years.
