Woking is a booming Surrey town which owes its growth to the Basingstoke Canal and the railway. Popular with commuters, it has a good range of shopping facilities, including two indoor centres and a market.

An evening’s entertainment is never far away in Woking. There is a choice of theatres and a cinema complex, not to mention a comedy club. During the day, one can enjoy a dip in the Pool in the Park, or perhaps a trip to the Royal Horticultural Society’s beautiful gardens at Wisley. For keen walkers, the 750 acre Horsell Common is worth a visit, and is notable for being the Martian landing place in HG Wells’ ‘War of the Worlds’. Wells lived in Woking when he wrote this famous story, and there are tributes to it dotted around the town.
