Guildford was first mentioned in about 880 A.D. when it started to develop into a major defensive and commercial centre for West Surrey. During this time the street pattern of the town was established, becoming the three main roads, the High Street, North Street and Castle Street.

By about 950 A.D. Guildford had become the commercial centre for Surrey. In 1066 the Normans conquered England and castles were built throughout the country including one in Guildford which is still there today. In 1257 Guildford became the county town of Surrey. George Abbot who became the Archbishop of Canterbury, was born in the area and died in 1633, and was buried in Holy Trinity Church.

As the wool trade began to fail in prosperity, Guildford utilised its location halfway between London and Portsmouth. It began to be used as a resting place for travellers during this time and many inns appeared. In 1683 the front of the Guildhall was built. The structure of the hall itself is Elizabethan but it stands on the earlier medieval Guildhall. The London and South West Railway extended into Guildford in 1845 so new industries thrived or were established.

Local attractions include Guildford Cathedral, the Museum, Castle, the Guildhall, the Guildford House Gallery and the Undercroft. Near the town are such noted beauty spots as Newlands Corner, the Silent Pool, and St. Martha's. Another nearby attraction is Clandon Park, National Trust Mansion. Guildford has excellent shopping facilities, transport links, leisure facilities and plays host to the arts through its Civic Hall and The Electric Theatre to street artists.
