Sudbury Old market town and port, eighteen miles west of Ipswich, once a major weaving centre, in the Stour valley. The birthplace of Gainsborough, and of William Dawes, one of the Pilgrim Fathers. Full of interesting buildings, notably 15th century Salter's Hall, old Moot Hall, All Saints' and St. Gregory's churches. Gainsborough’s House is a museum on the painter's life and work.
