Bury St Edmunds Bury St Edmunds

A very ancient city. The abbey was founded in the 8th century and its Gatehouse still stands. There is also a Norman Gateway, 80 feet high. There is a 13th century bridge over the Lark, and a Norman Moyses Hall. Mary Tudor, sister of Henry VIII, was buried in St. Mary's Church. St. James's is now the Cathedral. Humphrey, Duke of Gloucester, was murdered here. Nearby at West Stow is a reconstructed Saxon village and west of town unique Ickworth House (National Trust).
