Fine town, once the capital of Scotland, at the head of the Firth of Forth. It is an ideal base when exploring the magnificently varied scenery in the neighbourhood. The Castle, built high on a rock (like Edinburgh) overlooking Bannockburn, was a favourite residence of the Stuart Kings. Museum of the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders. Landmark Visitor Centre explains history. Mary, Queen of Scots, was crowned in the High Church when a baby of 8 months and her son James VI (James I of England) was baptised in the Royal Chapel. Nearby is the Bannockburn Heritage Centre. Wallace's sword may be seen in the Wallace Monument.
