Doncaster

A red-brick industrial town on the River Don, dating from Roman times. The Norman Keep and arch of Conisborough Castle, which was the home of Athelstane in Ivanhoe, still stand. There is a 16th century Grammar School and handsome 18th century Mansion House. The power loom was first used here by Cartwright in 1786. The famous horse-race, the St. Leger, is run over the Town Moor.
