East Kilbride town guide.

Hamilton town guide.

Rutherglen - Although right on the fringe of Glasgow the Borough has retained its independence. Its castle was burnt in 1568 and unfortunately all traces have since vanished.

Rutherglen has since evolved into a manufacturing town noted for chemicals and paper mills.

Strathaven - Pronounced Straven", this town is situated 10 miles south of Glasgow and 7 miles south-west of Hamilton. The village developed through weaving and brewing and in the 20th century produced knitwear and rayon products, and farm machinery.

Notable buildings include Dungavel House (the site Rudolf Hess aimed for in his 1941 flight which actually finished at Eaglesham), while nearby to the west is 'Lauder Ha'', home to the late Sir Harry Lauder. Also there is the ruins of a 13th century castle perched above the gorge of the Powmitten Burn.

Visitors are welcome at the 15th-century Avondale Castle, the Town Mill Arts Centre (in a 17th-century building), and the John Hastie Museum for local history and exhibitions of pottery, porcelain, weaving and Covenanters.
