Glastonbury Glastonbury is an ancient town with an intriguing history. Notable signs of its past include the remains of a Benedictine Abbey, which flourished during the Middle Ages, drawing many pilgrims to the town. However the town is also famous for the many legends surrounding it. Joseph of Arimathea is believed to have visited the town on more than one occasion, in particular following the crucifixion. It is rumoured that he brought the Holy Grail with him, giving rise to the legends surrounding Chalice Well, and that a thorn bush grew from his staff. The Glastonbury Tor, crowned with St Michael’s Tower, is one the most distinctive landmarks in the West Country. After a steep climb to the top, walkers are rewarded with fantastic views of the surrounding countryside. The town itself is a small but charming place with an interesting range of shops. Glastonbury is viewed by many as being a very spiritual place, and this is reflected by a number of local businesses.
