Shrewsbury

Set amidst glorious countryside near to the Welsh Borders, Shrewsbury is one of England's finest Tudor market towns and was an old fortress town standing high above the River Severn. This is the countryside which inspired the poet A.E. Housman to write of 'blue-remembered hills'.

The original Saxon settlement of Scrobbesbyrig occupied two small hills within a horseshoe loop of the River Severn. The Abbey church founded by the Normans in 1083 is still a place of worship.Roger de Montgomery, Earl of Shrewsbury, built the castle but after the Norman Conquest, it was besieged by Henry I, taken by Stephen, and Llewellyn the Great.

The battle of Shrewsbury in which Henry IV defeated rebels led by Harry Percy (Hotspur) took place in 1403. Black and white timber mansions dating back to the 1400's still line the narrow medieval cobbled streets of the town centre.

The 16th century Shrewsbury school, has had a remarkable succession of classical scholars. The Town has a museum on Clive of India who was MP for the City. There is also Rowley's House Museum and nearby is the grandiose 18th century Attingham Park (National Trust).

Shrewsbury is not just known for its history and architecture however. It is home to the world famous Shrewsbury Flower Show and in spring and summer the streets are adorned with flowers.A wealth of individual specialist shops set Shrewsbury apart from the usual run of chain stores, the town also boasts a range of quality Antiques Centres and shops.
