Perth The City of Perth sits at the head of the Firth of the river Tay, eighteen miles west of Dundee. It was the old capital of Scotland until James I was murdered here in 1437. The kings of Scotland set up the Government and Court of Scotland here and they were subsequently crowned sitting on the Stone of Destiny (recently returned to Scotland) often in the grounds of nearby Scone Palace. The harbour once played a large part in the local economy and moving large loads was confined to sea shipping. Most of the then buildings were of a fairly temporary nature, being built mainly of wood. Hence a limited ammount of ancient buildings in the town. Mill Lade, a canal built to power the main mills within the town, runs from the river Almond four miles North West of Perth before dividing in two upon reaching the city. This plentiful water supply was also the mainstay of the wool and tanning industries so important to early Perth. Perth also has many large distilleries in the neighbourhood, and blending at Dewars. The city has its own art gallery and museum, theatre and symphony concerts and the unique music of Scotland in fiddle concerts, clareach recitals and the Highland bagpipe.
