Witney Ten miles west of Oxford, market town on the River Windrush and on the Oxford-Cheltenham road. A picturesque stone-built quiet town, with one very wide street. A 17th century butter cross and a fine church with a prominent steeple. The present town was laid out as a new town in the early 13th century and has achieved fame and prosperity through weaving, in particular, blankets. The name proves a much greater antiquity as the chosen meeting place for the Witan or Councils of the Saxon Kings a thousand years ago. Close by is the living farm museum of Cogges Hall.
