Berwick-upon-Tweed Two miles from the Scottish border, on the north bank of the River Tweed, Berwick is one of Britain's most historically interesting towns. Initially part of England, between the 11th century and the 15th century it changed hands between Scotland and England many times. Encircled by medieval walls, which are still in very good condition, Berwick-upon-Tweed has developed its own unique culture. Although it is part of England, their football team – Berwick Rangers – are in the Scottish league. The town attracts many visitors. As well as the walls and the remains of the Norman castle, there are a number of historic features in the area. Berwick Barracks, home to two museums and an art gallery, were constructed in the 18th century, and are a noticeable feature in the town. Also built in that century, on the banks of the Tweed, was Paxton House, which has beautiful grounds and lots of fun activities. Not too far away is the Holy Island of Lindisfarne, with its 11th century Benedictine priory and distinctive castle.
