Town Guide - almost every destination in the UK
York York

York has about everything you could wish for in a large historical city. It is slightly south central in Yorkshire, britains largest county, so it is surrounded by wonderful countryside. Its history can be traced substantially in Yorks many museums and exhibitions (it has over 30 museums, galleries and tours), however, this city is not just associated with the past.

York Minster was twice burnt down before 1070, and the present building, which was started in 1080 and finished in 1470, is one of the four biggest churches north of the Alps and Pyrenees. Its principal feature is the amount of medieval stained glass that is left. There are a large number of medieval churches and houses in York. The Yorvik Viking centre details the city's Viking past and the town has a substantial roman history.

Visitors can enjoy first class shopping in major high street stores, traditional gift shops and independent boutiques alike, whilst the fashion conscious head for the new designer outlet village on the city's outskirts. Evening entertainment in the city is equally varied and might involve a moonlit boat cruise, a concert or theatre visit.
