Fine market town near the Hambleton Hills, (North Yorkshire Moors National Park) on the road to York. Three old inns and cobbled market place.The 15th century Parish Church has a notable Irish oak roof with open-work parapet and many pinnacles, and is the most impressive in the North Riding. Birthplace of Thomas Lord (1755-1822) who founded the cricket ground in London.
