Fifteen miles north west of Bradford. On the River Aire, a busy industrial town among the hills of the West Riding. Its Norman Castle became the great stronghold of the Cliffords and it has been described as one of the best preserved medieval fortresses in England. Fortunately it was restored soon after its occupation in the Civil War. Fine monuments of the Cliffords are still to be seen in the church.
