Northallerton The capital of the North Riding, fifteen miles south of Middlesborough, has one long broad street of red brick houses. Once a Roman settlement. The church is second only to Thirsk in beauty in the Riding. The Battle of the Standard (a ship's mast fastened to a low carriage which ran on four wheels) was fought just to the north of the town in 1138 and the Scots were routed. Nearby at Sutton Bank is a visitor centre for the North Yorkshire Moors National Park.
