Situated to the north of Chester, the Wirral is a narrow peninsular which separates the River Dee estuary from that of the River Mersey. Neighbouring Liverpool can be reached by the Queensway underground tunnel, which was opened by King George V on the 18 July 1934, in honour of his wife, Queen Mary. The Kingsway Tunnel was later opened in 1971 by Queen Elizabeth II.The main towns which lie to the east of The Wirral include Bebington, Ellesemere Port and For tourists and residents in the area, there is much to see and do including the Williamson Art Gallery and Museum in Birkenhead, which houses a collection of pottery and Liverpool porcelain exhibits as well as examples of English watercolours. The personal pre-raphaelite art collection of Lord and Lady Lever can be viewed at the Lady Lever Art Gallery in Bebington. The area has many recreational facilities and is a popular sailing centre, and Leasowes Lighthouse, the oldest lighthouse in England on the Mockbeggar Wharf, built in 1763 from 660,000 handmade bricks is another popular attraction.
