Stamford Ten miles north east of Peterborough. A town on the Welland, containing a number of ancient houses of exceptional beauty. One of the finest towns of stone buildings in Britain it was once the capital of the Fens. Tudor, Queen Anne and Georgian buildings. Location for filming of Middlemarch by BBC. There is a 15th century hospital, and the ruins of a 12th century Priory. Originally the town had 14 churches, of which four rich examples remain. In St. Martin's is an effigy of Lord Burghley, and the grave of Daniel Lambert who weighed 53 stone. Burghley House, a magnificent Elizabethan mansion, stands in a park outside the town - famous as location of horse trials.
