Tonbridge Kent the garden of England is home to Tonbridge, a small town close to Tunbridge Wells, which dates back to Anglo Saxon times. Historical Tonbridge Independent School, was founded in 1553 by Sir Andrew Judd, master of the Skinner’s Company, where Jane Austen’s father was once a school master. Surrounded by 14 acres of grounds and castle walls are the substantial remains of a Norman Castle, once owned by Richard de Tonbridge, and mentioned in the Domesday Book in 1087, made useless as a fort after the Civil War of 1642. This ancient landmark has been converted into fine pleasure grounds hosting annual events and is a perfect site for country walks. Nearby is Penshurst Place, a Tudor castle, once the home of Sir Philip Sidney. Complimenting the laid back atmosphere of country life in Tonbridge, is a wide range of restaurants as well as nightlife ranging from cinemas, music and theatre events.
