The area features a wealth of historical sites well worth a visit. The Norman Castle and Cathedral at Rochester are perhaps the area's most famous landmarks but also impressive are the World Naval Base at Chatham Docks and the Napoleonic Fort Amherst.

The town’s most famous inhabitant was Charles Dickens. Having spent most of his life in the area, various buildings and haunts of his youth make appearances in his fiction.
