The enchanting and ancient city of Canterbury, in the county of Kent, garden of England was founded over two thousand years ago when it was a Belgic settlement. Once invaded by Julius Caesar in 54 BC, and followed by the Anglo Saxons, it was in 597, that St Augustine arrived here on his mission to spread Christianity throughout England, building his first Cathedral. Canterbury soon became the Metropolitan City of the English church and today remains the home of the Archbishop of Canterbury.

It was in Canterbury Cathedral that Thomas a Becket, the martyred Archbishop of Canterbury was murdered in 1179, and today a single candle marks the spot of his tomb. Throughout the ages pilgrims have traveled all over Europe to visit his shrine, one of which was immortalised by Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales. In addition to it’s Cathedral, Canterbury is home to St Martin’s Church, the oldest church in England which is still in use, and the ruins of St Augustine’s Abbey, who’s material once torn down was used to build St Augustine’s College, now part of Kings College, London.

As a University city, close to the seaside, Canterbury offers a number of great days out to museums and galleries, nearby Bodiam Castle, and Marlow Theatre, and when you have finished sightseeing there’s a number of pubs, clubs and restaurants to relax in and enjoy the views of this historic town.
