Town close to the River Trent where a quarter of the country's steel is produced by one steel works. The town did have four such works, having grown at a remarkable rate from a handful of small villages to a population of 70,000 in 100 years. This was caused by the discovery in 1864 of the richest load of ironstone anywhere in Europe. The town has done much to improve its environment, in particular making use of the industrial land. There is a fine museum in a former vicarage. The church, from one of the villages, dates back to the 12th century. Museum and art gallery. Nearby is Normanby Hall and Country Park.
