A popular seaside resort possessing a magnificent fragment of the Priory Church, the last Prior of which was hanged at Tyburn for his share in the Pilgrimage of Grace, 1537. Queen Henrietta Maria landed here on February 22nd, 1643, with arms and ammunition for Charles I. Flamborough Head, five miles north-east, is a fine chalk promontory, with Bempton Cliffs, all chalk, continuing to north west. The famous architect and designer William Kent was born here.
