Stevenage Until 1946 this was just a pleasant town on the Great North Road with many old historic houses, notably the White Lion", a famous posting-house, and the "Swan". Since then, while the old town is still there, it has developed into a new town. A lively museum tells the story. Nearby (to the west of the A1(M) is Knebworth House and Park. Near here are the prehistoric earthworks known as the "Six Hills".
