Hereford Hereford lies on England's border with Wales. It was walled by the Saxons who made it their capital of West Mercia. The Normans built its eleven-towered castle and the first cathedral was built in 1012. The present Cathedral was begun in 1079 and contains a perfect Early English Lady Chapel, (Decorated Stalls and Cantilupe shrine, Norman font, unique Early English Crypt), and 15th century cloisters. The cathedral library is a treasure house, which has on display, the Mappa Mundi, a unique map of the world drawn around AD 1300. The High town is the hub of the city and provides a central open space for a variety of events and street entertainment throughout the year. Other places of interest include All Saints' Church and St. Peter's Church; David Garrick's birthplace, the "Raven" Inn; Coningsby Hospital; and the Episcopal Palace. There is also the Cider Museum and the Waterworks Museum.
