Welcome to Basingstoke's Townpage

Archaeological sites in the area, dating back to the bronze and iron age indicate that Basingstoke in Hampshire was an early settlement, which at one time was occupied by the Romans. The banks of the River Loddon, where a Roman Villa once stood, have provided a wealth of historical finds including coins and pottery, which are exhibited at the Willis Museum in New Street.

Designated a London overspill area in 1961, Basingstoke’s population quadrupled in size as new business arrived. Prior to this period, Basingstoke was a market town whose main industry was the manufacture of wool, characterised by old fashioned buildings which were demolished and replaced by modern car parks and office buildings in the latter part of the twentieth century.

Located in the area are a number of country parks and historic houses to visit, including the ruins of Basing House, destroyed by Cromwell. The Basingstoke Canal is a wonderfully scenic route where dragon-flies and beautiful water-plants can be viewed whilst taking a boat ride or by path. Alternatively the town offers a huge number of entertainment attractions, clubs and pubs, and is home to the Haymarket Theatre and Fairfield Arts Centre.
