Newport

Twelve miles north east of Cardiff. A large town on the estuary of the Usk, with famous docks and a transporter bridge 177 feet high. This ancient town had its town charter granted by Richard II. The front of the great Norman castle, which was rebuilt in the 14th century, is very imposing. The church of St. Woollos, which is now the Cathedral, has been aptly described as a Norman gem in a Gothic basket, and contains fine monuments. Outside the town is Caerleon with superb amphitheatre and archaeological Museum and the Fourteen Lock Canal Centre on the Monmouthshire and Brecon Canal.
