To north east of Manchester. A great former cotton town with fine public buildings and beautiful Alexandra Park. Woollen weaving town from 17th century, but with mechanical spinning and weaving, switched to cotton. William Cobbett, the great radical, was MP for Oldham. Art gallery has fine selection of British Art.
