Bury North of Manchester. A pleasant cotton town, where the Flemings worked their woollen manufacture in Edward III's reign. Sir Robert Peel was born here, and it was here that John Kay invented the fly-shuttle and Robert Kay the drop box which enabled the weaver to work in different patterns and colours. Art gallery includes paintings by Turner, Constable and Landseer. East Lancashire Steam Railway runs to Rowtenstall in Rossendale.
