Welcome to Bolton's Townpage

Was known in the I7th century as the Geneva of Lancashire. Was besieged by the Royalists three times in the Civil War, being eventually taken with much bloodshed by Lord Derby and Prince Rupert. On account of his ruthlessness, Lord Derby was himself beheaded here in 1651. Samuel Crompton, inventor of the spinning mule, lived at Hall i' th' Wood, a late I5th century house, now a Crompton Museum.
