Altrincham South of Manchester, Altrincham emerged as a market town in 1290, the Old Market Place still has replicas of the original market cross, stocks and whipping post. Growth was spurred like many other towns in the area by the Bridgewater Canal. Goose Green is a local small square featuring quaint old cottages and a sculpture entitled ‘The Geese’. Much of Altrincham’s local history was influenced by the landlords of the famous Dunham Massey House and its deer park. Built in the 18th century it has been the seat of the Earls of Stamford and Warrington.
