Wimbledon Wimbledon is a word which is now synonymous with tennis, and yet this town in the London borough of Merton offers much to see and do aside from a trip to the famous Wimbledon Championship. Although there is believed to have been people inhabiting the area in prehistoric times, it was not until the 16th century that Wimbledon really began to develop. Over the following years houses and shops were built, but it was not until the 20th century, particularly following the wars, that it became the busy place it is today. Wimbledon has some excellent theatres, including Wimbledon Theatre and the Colourhouse Theatre. There is also the Polka Theatre, which is especially for children. Children may also enjoy a visit to Wimbledon Common. It is home to an early 19th century windmill, and there is also a Windmill Museum. If you like museums, don't forget to visit the Wimbledon Lawn Tennis Museum, housed within the All England Tennis Club.
