Welcome to Enfield's Townpage

Enfield is located on the northern edge of Greater London and adjoins the Hertfordshire and Essex countryside. The town is anglo saxon in origin and its name, meaning “field belonging to Eana” dates from that period. One quarter of the borough is green belt land and is in use as country parks and farm land. Although very close to central London, Enfield feels very much like a country town, and is complimented by a number of historic buildings including Alexandra Palace and Myddleton House and Gardens.

Enfield began to prosper after the introduction of the Lee Valley Railway Line in 1849, and by the end of the 19th century had grown substantially in population and size. After the First World War the development of suburban areas continued but was prevented from spreading further by the introduction of the Green Belt restrictions. The opening of the London Underground Piccadilly Line in 1939 closed the gap between Enfield Town and London.

The London Borough of Enfield includes the postcode areas EN1, EN2, N3, N9, N13, N14, N18 and N21.
