Barnet Barnet, like nearby Harrow is a suburban borough, with a high proportion of the land preserved as Green Belt. It was in 1199 that King John granted the local Abbott a royal charter and Barnet began to flourish, and in Elizabethan times, Londoners would often walk up the old main road to it’s great town fair to enjoy the day out. Historically, Barnet lies on the Great North Road out of London, which as an important thoroughfare has seen several historical events. The armies of York and Lancaster met here during the War of the Roses in 1471, and the Earl of Warwick was slain fleeing the battle site. During the Civil War, Charles I escaped to Barnet on his way to Oxford. Today Barnet is situated on both the M1 and M25, offering easy access to the south east of England and London attractions. The London Borough of Barnet includes the postcode areas of, N2, N3, N11, N12, N20, NW4, NW7, NW11 and HA8.
