The largest city in Scotland. The Cathedral was begun in 1179 on the site of St. Mungo's monastic cell, and was completed by Archbishop Blackadder, whose crypt is a remarkable piece of work. The famous University was founded in 1450. To-day the city is a great centre of commerce, partly owing to its situation on the Clyde. Its shipbuilding yards saw the birth of the Comet, the first steamship on the Clyde; and some of our greatest battleships and liners. A very fine centre for the tourist wishing to explore the Scott and Burns countries, the Isle of Arran, the Western Highlands and the Hebrides.
