Welcome to Glasgow's Townpage

The largest city in Scotland. The Cathedral was begun in 1179 on the site of St. Mungo's monastic cell, and was completed by Archbishop Blackadder, whose crypt is a remarkable piece of work. The famous University was founded in 1450. To-day the city is a great centre of commerce, partly owing to its situation on the Clyde. Its shipbuilding yards saw the birth of the Comet, the first steamship on the Clyde; and some of our greatest battleships and liners. A very fine centre for the tourist wishing to explore the Scott and Burns countries, the Isle of Arran, the Western Highlands and the Hebrides. Superb museums of modern art, including the Burrell Collection. UK City of Architecture and Design in 1998.
