The largest town in Essex, Southend has established itself as a vibrant seaside resort with over seven miles of beaches. The town’s most famous feature is its 19th century pleasure pier. Over a mile in length, it is the longest of its kind in the world.

The town has responded to its growing popularity as a tourist resort by developing a number of exciting new visitor attractions, one of them being Adventure Island which now boasts over 40 rides. Others include the sealife aquarium, pavilion, funfair and Kursaal. The name comes from the days when it was the south end of Prittlewell which has a park with the remains of Priory founded in 1110.
