Halstead A small town in the Colne valley some six miles north of Braintree, Halstead has a large weatherboarded-mill beside the river which is now an antiques centre, but was set up as a factory by the Huguenot Courtauld family in 1826. The family name is well known today because of the superb collection of paintings in London which was bestowed by Samuel Courtauld.
