Colchester Colchester is the oldest recorded British town – a reference being made to it by Pliny the Elder who lived in the 1st century. The Roman Emperor Claudius founded the first Roman colony in this country here in AD 43, and as a result, there are many fine remains in the area. Colchester Castle was built following William the Conqueror’s successful invasion, and is an imposing edifice still in good repair. Colchester has much to offer to both visitors and residents. Its galleries and museums range from displays of modern art to collections of antique clocks. The town is also well-known for its zoo, which has penguin parades, falconry displays and animals ranging from elephants to otters. In the evening, entertainments on offer include the theatre, cinema or perhaps a concert, and of course the opportunity for a delicious meal at one of the local restaurants.
