Braintree

A fine mix of old and new buildings make up this town which belonged to the Bishops of London. Sadly a long tradition of clothworking, (lastly silk weaving thanks to the Huguenot Courtauld family) has come to an end. Braintree's other speciality has been metal windows. The famous botanist John Ray was born and buried at nearby Black Notley.
