Town Guide - almost every destination in the UK
Edinburgh

Edinburgh, Scotland’s capital city is regarded as one of the most beautiful cities in Europe. Edinburgh Castle, the Royal Mile, the Palace of Holyrood under Salisbury Crags, the National Gallery, Scott Monument and the cobbled alleyways of the Old Town are just some of the attractions to visitors.

Formerly known as the Highland Tolbooth, the old Scottish Assembly Rooms now accommodate The Hub, home of the annual Edinburgh International Festival. Redesigned by Benjamin Tindall, this magnificent Victorian building offers those who stay in and visit the city a place to learn about the festivals, and true to its regal style was officially opened by Her Majesty the Queen in July 1999.

There is always much to do in the city with something for everyone including galleries, theatres, museums and restaurants, which serve food from across the globe as well as Scottish cuisine.

Unlike most of Britain’s old cities, which emerged close to a river valley, Edinburgh was built on the hills where there has been evidence of Iron Age occupation on Castle Rock, and because Edinburgh has guarded its heritage so closely, much of the city remains medieval.
