Alexandria - 4 miles north of Dumbarton, the town lies on the River Leven flowing from Loch Lomond. Alexandria is famous for the factory where Scottish Argyll cars were manufactured. The author Tobias Smollett was born at the old house of Dalquharn in 1721; a memorial now stands in Renton. Dumbarton - Important former ship-building town, on north side of Clyde, created a Royal Burgh by Alexander II. The Castle is strikingly situated on a massive rock, and commands glorious views. The birthplace of Gildas, the earliest British historian. Golf.
