A doula (pronounced “doo-luh”) aims to help women through childbirth offering help based on experience and understanding of childbirth and the issues surrounding it.
There are, broadly speaking, 2 categories of doula – these are birth and post-natal doula. Their roles are different although there is much crossover between them. Birth Doula

A non-medical assistant that provides support before, during and for a few hours after birth. This support can include liaising with hospital staff, providing one-to-one care and friendly and focused comfort to the mother and father.

This role is more about supporting the mother after child birth perhaps with caring for younger siblings, establishing routines and helping with breastfeeding, answering all questions, talking about anxieties the mother may be feeling and discussing issues from the birth.
