At the confluence of the Allen and Stour, five miles north of Poole, and occupying the site of a Roman station. Town's origin is the foundation in the 8th century of an abbey and later the Minster of St. Cuthberga. The Minster Church is Norman with an Early English Chancel. Astronomical clock in the west tower with performing figure. Chained books in the vestry. Town has charming centre with Georgian buildings and a square. Award-winning Priest's House Museum. Nearby are richly decorated 17th century Kingston Lacy House and Iron Age Badbury Rings.
