Weymouth Weymouth is centrally placed on the Dorset coast and is surrounded by many attractions both modern and historical, as well as some beautiful countryside and coastline. The area has previously been populated by the ancient britons and the Romans and the strategic position of the port has given the town a great seafaring significance. The port was a supplier of ships for the Armada, ransacked by the French, and fought over in the Civil War. The harbour has seen many wars including during Napoleonic times and World War II when 516,000 US troops left our ports for the D-Day invasion in Normandy. There are ferry services today to the Channel Islands. Weymouth's many attractions include Corfe Castle, which dates back to the Norman settlements after the Battle of Hastings in 1066, the Tolpuddle Martyrs Museum, Maiden Castle - a vast earth hill fort built by the Ancient Britons or the Cerne Abbas "giant", thought to be the Celtic God of fertility, Nodens, an awesome carving in the chalk hills of Cerne. Sir Christopher Wren was born here. In 1763 the first bathing machine was used here and from 1789 King George III became a frequent visitor, staying in what is now the Gloucester Hotel. As well as having its own quays, beach, shops and other seaside and marine attractions it is also located next door to the Island of Portland which is linked by road to the mainland and the bizarre Chesil Beach, which stretches for several miles and has water on either side. Portland itself has many places of interest include: Portland Bill, Pulpit Rock and Lighthouse overlooking the English Channel; Portland Castle, one of the best preserved of Henry VIII's Coastal forts. Portland Museum and Shipwreck Exhibition; Church Ope Cove, with the ruins of Rufus Castle and St Andrew's Church. There are also Gardens, Churches, a Sculpture Park and Cliff Walks offering spectacular views. The beautiful Lulworth Cove is also close by, offering its own attractions such as the famous Durdle Door, Monkeyworld, the Tank museum and Lulworth House.
