Sherborne

A lively north Dorset town on the River Yeo eighteen miles north of Dorchester, with a public school, two castles and an ancient abbey. The oldest castle is 12th century and ruined, the second was built by Sir Walter Raleigh and its park later landscaped by Capability Brown. The town has charm and character. On the main railway line from London to Exeter. Sherborne School was founded by St. Aldhelm, and refounded by Edward VI. The magnificent Abbey is mainly Perpendicular on a Norman fabric and almost rivals King's Chapel. The Almshouses, having a quadrangle and cloisters, are very picturesque. The Castle was built for Sir Walter Raleigh. An old world town of great beauty. Nearby is Cadbury Castle, suggested location of Camelot.
